Perserverance - Late in December, 1819, the schooner Perseverance left St. Andrews for Jamaica . A powerful storm struck on December 31. The schooner filled with water, was capsized, came back upright with masts broken off and three of the crew drowned. Two more died of exposure. The captain, now alone, rigged a piece of sail to the foremast stump and drove before the wind to the Nova Scotia shore.
