The steamship "Hestia" (2,434 tons) struck the Old Proprietor Ledge, off Grand Manan, in rough weather at 1 a.m. on October 25, 1909. 35 of the 41 persons on board took to the lifeboats; the other six remained on the stranded steamer. All on the lifeboats were lost, some drowned, some died of exposure; the six on the shipwreck were rescued by fishermen from Grand Manan two days later.
