The steamer "Flushing" was purchased by a group of Grand Manan businessmen in 1884 to connect the Island with the mainland in regular ferry service, four round trips a week. The "Flushing" was severely damaged by fire in Saint John in January, 1886, but the Grand Manan men had their steamer rebuilt and she continued to serve the Island until 1900 when she was replaced by the steamer "Aurora".
